Ethylene-vinyl acetate ( EVA ), also known as poly ( ethylene-vinyl acetate ) (PEVA), is the copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate. The weight percent vinyl acetate usually varies from 10% to 40%, with the remainder being ethylene.

EVA is an elastomeric polymer that produces materials which are "rubber-like" in softness and flexibility. This is distinct from a thermoplastic, in that the material is cross-linked, and thus difficult to recycle. The material has good clarity and gloss, low-temperature toughness, stress-crack resistance, hot-melt adhesive waterproof properties, and resistance to UV radiation. EVA has a distinctive vinegar like odor and is competitive with rubber and vinyl products in many electrical applications.

How to Install Foam Tiles

1. Pick a starting point to begin your installation. Many customers like to start in a cormer and spread out from there. 
2. Lay your soft tiles down and lock them together. The tiles interlock together similar to a puzzle, only you will never have to guess where each piece goes since the locks are the same on each side of each foam tile.

          

2. If installing the tiles wall to wall so as to completely fill a room, some cutting may be required. This is easily done with a utility knife and a straight edge such as a ruler or yard stick.
3. Once your desired area is covered, that’s it. You’re all done and congratulations on completing your foam flooring installation. It’s that easy!

As we all know that the Olympics are a platform for some extraordinary performances that include stunts that make me want to hold my breath. When the athletes jump and flip around, I feel some reassurance that they are protected by the mats that would cushion their fall or landing. While Gymnastics is likely the most anticipated and viewed Summer Olympic sport, Track and Field High Jumping, Pole Vaulting and Martial Arts are other examples of Olympic competitive events that utilize gym mats for their routines.

Olympic gymnastics events, in all of their rigorous, intense training, are quite simple when it comes to mandatory equipment. Gym floor mats are used for cushioning when landing from a performance. Competition landing Mats are recommended because they provide significant shock-absorption for gymnasts sticking landings from vault, bars, and balance beam routines. The cushioning of the gym mats does not guarantee the prevention of injuries, but certainly will prevent an injury from becoming as serious as it may have been without this extra level of protection (if used properly).


Olympic Track and Field High Jumpers and Pole Vaulters also utilize thick, cushioned gym mats as a mandatory part of their events. High jumpers scale a bar by leaping and hoisting themselves over the bar and, finally, landing on the gym mat. Pole vaulters utilize a long pole for support and then use it to propel themselves over a high bar and then also land on a gym mat. Because of the vertical heights that are reached in these events, landing on a well-cushioned surface is critical to protection from serious injuries.

Olympic Martial arts athletes utilize gym mats as a well-padded floor surface on which they perform as well. As this event is a highly intensive, contact sport, having a shock-absorbent surface on which the athletes perform is crucial to the prevention or reduction in injuries that they may potentially face if they are knocked to the ground during a match. 1 ½” mats with extra-firm foam are recommended because they provide firm footing and “street conditions”, without a sinking effect.

Though all of these Olympic events utilize gym mats in different manners, their common thread is that they reduce the risks of injury that Olympic athletes face while competing in these sports.

In case you have not heard, EVA foam mats (marketed as safe and non-toxic) may contain formamide (CAS 75-12-7) which a substance classified as reproductive toxin. Formamide is a chemical added to soften EVA foam, making it more pliable. According to Test Achat, formamide is harmful to reproduction and fetal development, and is a skin and eye irritant. In the European Union, formamide is also classified as CMR, or carcinogenic and or mutagenic or toxic to reproduction. In a directive issued in mid-2009, the use of CMR substances in toys will be prohibited in all EU countries in July 2013.

While US tests have established a link between formamide and certain cancers, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer has not yet evaluated the carcinogenicity of formamide.

Even if the foam manufacturer does not use formamide, they often use other dangerous substances such as N,N- diméthylformamide (CAS 68-12-2) and N-méthylformamide (CAS 123-39-7) which are also classified as toxic for reproduction. They may also use acetophenone (CAS 98-86-2), a substance classified as harmful and an irritant. In addition some manufactures use microban (triclosane) to prevent bacterial growth which has its own problems (subject of a future post).

So as you can see, a foam mat manufacturer can claim they are formamide free and that their mats are non-toxic and safe. But that may not and probably is not the case.

Some countries have withdrawn foam play mats from shelves due to concerns that they are not safe.

Belgium
On 10 December 2010, Minister Paul Magnette, who is responsible for consumer production, ordered that foam puzzle mats be withdrawn from the market due to concern that they contain a dangerous substance. This withdrawal follows a series of controls on dangerous substances placed on toys made of EVA foam. These controls were necessary as these products have shown high levels of formamide (CAS 75-12-7), a substance classified as toxic for reproduction.

A study performed by a consumer magazine Test Achat in 2009 revealed that some products contained dangerous substances. This led to Belgian authorities to, on one hand, withdraw products from the market, and on the other hand, for professionals to further evaluate the safety of these products.

France
Belgian authorities communicated their safety measures regarding puzzle mats to France. On 13 December 2010, Marie Taillard who is responsible for press communication for the General Directorate for Competition Policy, Consumer Affairs and Fraud (DGCCRF), urged industry not to sell puzzle mats pending further information on the toxicity of these toys. The State Secretary responsible for consumer issues, Frédéric Lefebvre, also requested DGCCRF to proceed without delay to impose toxicity controls on foam puzzle mats intended for children and sold on the French market.



Bottom line, when a baby is having quality tummy-time with parents or learning to crawl they should not be exposed to toxic chemicals. Formamide, phthalates, plasticizers, BPA, AZO dyes, heavy metals or other harmful chemicals should not be used in products designed for babies and toddlers. Look for products with contact surfaces made out natural fibers grown without pesticides (i.e. organic cotton). Look for products without fire resistance chemicals or chemicals added to make the product resistant to bacteria, wrinkling or staining. Finally, look for manufacturers who post the results of their environmental & health testing.

In fact, your child will spend most of the first few months of his or her life on their tummy-so why not make them comfortable? And Your child will spend a lot of time on the floor and on their tummy so that they can strengthen their muscles and eventually learn to roll over. Follow this basic guide to making a playmat for your baby to protect them from dirt and germs during tummy time. Best of all, the play mat rolls up so it is easily stashed in the diaper bag for play time on the go.

Materials:

• Quilter's cotton fabric
• Ruler Scissors
• Ribbon
• Straight pins
• Sewing machine
• Iron

Steps:

1. Measure and cut 25 6 1/2-inch squares of fabric and a 30-inch square of fabric.

2. Divide the 6 1/2-inch squares of fabric into five piles of five squares each. Sew each pile of squares into a strip by sewing the squares together side-by-side with a 1/4-inch seamallowance.

3. Sew the strips of squares together with a 1/4-inch seam allowance along the long edges to form a large square. The large square will be a 5-by-5 grid of all the smaller squares.

4. Measure and cut two foot-long pieces of 1-inch-wide ribbon.

5. Place the 30-inch square of fabric and the pieces together square of fabric together with the right sides facing each other. Line up the ends of the two pieces of ribbon you cut. Place the two pieces of ribbon between the two squares 6 inches in from one corner so the ends of the ribbon are flush with the edge of the fabric. Pin the two pieces of fabric together along the edges and the ribbons in place between them.

6. Sew along all four edges of the two squares with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Leave a 6-inch opening in the middle of one of the edges. Turn the play mat right side out through the 6-inch opening.

7. Fold the raw edges of the fabric in a 1/2-inch along the 6-inch opening. Iron these folds and the rest of the four edges of the play mat.

8. Top stitch along all four sides of the play mat with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Use a decorative stitch for the top stitch to give the play mat an added decorative touch.

9. Lay the play mat out flat with the ribbon strips coming out of the top edge. Fold the play mat in half left to right. Fold it in half again in the same direction. Roll the play mat up from the bottom to the top.
